Valley of the Grand Lauter
Welcome to the valley of the Danube’s prettiest tributary! The great Lauter river rises in the picturesque courtyard of the former Offenhausen convent. It winds along its natural river bed for 40 km, along juniper-covered heaths, past caves, woods, rocks, quaint villages and ruined castles to the point of confluence with the Danube between Obermarchtal and Untermarchtal. Countless fields border the river as it makes its way across the flood plain. From vantage points above the river, many ruined castles are a reminder of their importance in a bygone era. In a single 15km-stretch there are 10 ruined fortifications.
Along the river Lauter there are lots of amenities for parking, picnicking, playing, and resting. The recreational areas in the Münsingen valley are:
_ Buttenhausen: at the Wasserstetten end of the town.
_ Bichishausen: at the Gundelfingen end of the town, opposite the Hirsch guesthouse.
_ Gundelfingen: south of town at the Heiligental exit.
