The Swabian Alb: UNESCO biosphere reserve
The Swabian Alb surrounding Münsingen and the former military training camp are a UNESCO biosphere reserve. This distinction recognises the region’s efforts to maintain sustainable development and to protect the local cultural landscape. The UNESCO biosphere title is given just once for a specific type of cultural landscape in Germany. And our region has plenty to offer with its sloping beech woods and calcareous grasslands – often with grazing sheep to keep the grass in check.
The purpose of UNESCO biosphere reserves is to establish models whereby economic activity can function sustainably in an intact natural landscape. The way forward is the careful use of natural resources, not the blanket prohibition of human activity in the area.
